Hanging Out With Friends

Friday, August 10th, 2018

Monday, August 6th was BC Day here and some of us from Brunette Machinery got together at the Vancouver Convention Centre for the Tony Robbins and Friends, “Power of Success” show.

Six of us travelled downtown to experience the intensity, exuberance and excitement that embodies a Tony Robbins event. Along with 5000 other people, we were engaged in a motivating session that included stimulating talks by six renowned speakers who spoke on topics including communications, relationships, lifeskills and personal empowerment.

The speakers were interesting and each of them taught us something new or reminded us of a skill or practice that makes life just a little easier in some small way. One of our favourite sessions, was the presentation by Loretta LaRoche an internationally known stress expert. Loretta is in her eighties and she delivers her message with humour and insight. We were in stitches, and she left us wanting more.

Of course, the most motivating speaker was Tony Robbins himself. He sure knows how to get a crowd excited. We spent the last few hours of the day, clapping, yelling and feeling great. It was intense to say the least! We certainly all gained some insight into human behaviours, we were definitely motivated to reach new personal heights and we definitely all learned a little more about ourselves and each other.

It was a fun, exciting and passionate — a great team-building event. Thanks to Kirk for the opportunity!

Go Team Brunette!

Looking for a New Chipper?

Wednesday, July 25th, 2018

FOR SALE from stock — BRUNETTE Drum Chipper Model 6040.

The BRUNETTE Drum Chipper 6040 is specifically designed to produce quality chips from short material such as trim blocks, log ends, and lily pads. The machine is a Drum type Chipper with knives that extend across the full face width of the drum which ensures uniform chipping and reduces the amount of cards and overs.

A clam shell opening operated by a hydraulic cylinder provides an ergonomically friendly working area for knife change. The knife clamps are designed with a self-opening feature that eliminates the need to remove the clamps or nuts during knife changes. The knife pocket is equipped with counter knives for easy replacement.

Throw Back Thursday — The Way We Were.

Thursday, July 5th, 2018

We’re celebrating our 75th anniversary and we are feeling the excitement! We are busy planning celebrations, projects and events to commemorate this milestone.

As we were sifting through the company archives we came across a treasure trove of old photos and memorabilia that had us heading down memory lane, trying to identify times, places and people.

Brunette Machine Works photo

This group photo shows the team at Brunette Machine Works in New Westminster, circa 1965. Looking at their oil-saturated coveralls, we thought about the changes that these men had seen throughout their careers at Brunette — and how their work helped to build and modernize the lumber market.

The machine in the centre is a Brunette 14” Ring Log Debarker that was built in the shop. Standing next to the debarker, in the suit and tie, is Harold Pousette. Harold was the son of Gus Pousette, one of the founders of Pousette and Murray, which later became Brunette Machine Works Ltd.

Also, in this photo, is John K. (Ken) Woollam, who invented the rotary air seal for Brunette’s revolutionary Air Seal Ring Debarker. He is in the front row, wearing the vest and white shirt.

As we were poring over this picture, it was amazing how many people our long-timers recognized. “That’s Gordie! There, in the back, that’s Bob — I’m positive! “Wait, that’s Jack!” and Look, there’s Jimmy — who can forget Jimmy!”

When we were done marvelling over the old photographs and we headed back to our desks, we were all smiling and remembering days gone by. Brunette has a remarkable history to recollect — the inventions, the big machines that were made in the shop: huge saws, chippers, bandmills, and screens. And of course, all the people who have contributed to the growth of the company from its small shop on the New Westminster waterfront to today where our close-knit, enthusiastic team continues to manufacture and develop new equipment for the forestry industry.

75 years — a milestone indeed!

OptiSaw 2018

Friday, June 8th, 2018

This past Tuesday, BMC was at Optisaw — Mill Optimization & Automation Forum 2018. We joined a group of mill managers/owners, project managers, researchers and others involved in the lumber industry to learn about cutting edge technologies that are advancing the future of optimization and automation of our sawmills. The presentations ranged from modern scanning machinery, to leading trends in robotics and artificial intelligence and the emerging importance of big data as it relates to the forestry industry.

There were ten interesting presentations —  fascinating topics that provided food for thought — throughout the day that generated a lot of questions and conversations. The scientific advances in mill optimization and automation is exciting and it was amazing to learn about the trending modernization tools that are available in the industry today. We were happy to have participated in this forum and we look forward to attending more events.

Brunette Presents at OptiSaw 2018

Tuesday, May 8th, 2018

Capital is an exciting word in the forestry industry. In the lumber mill business, considering capital expenditure means answering the question: Do you repair or replace, a major piece of equipment?

Patrick Browne ImageBrunette Machinery’s Patrick Browne will present a case study on this issue at OptiSaw — the one-day educational forum aimed at those involved in the sawmill business — happening on June 5, 2018 in Richmond, BC.

Patrick’s study focuses on the log singulator, an innovative machine that notably changed the forest industry in the 1980’s. He explores the pros and cons of investing in the most recent technology or repairing/maintaining existing time-tested units.

OptiSaw, presented by Canadian Forest Industries’ Wood Business, will feature Brunette’s case study along with other topics concerning the future of sawmilling.

Join us at this informative event on June 5th, 2018 at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel, in Richmond, BC. This forum is geared to people associated with the sawmill industry —sawmill management and owners, process engineers, continual improvement managers, optimization staff, researchers and design consultants.

Feb. 2018 – Logging and Sawmill Journal Article – RTL – Log Singulator

Friday, March 9th, 2018

Check out the latest equipment in our line-up of great machines

RETRACT-TO-LOAD® (RTL) LOG SINGULATOR

Recently featured in the February 2018 edition of Logging & Sawmilling Journal

“Successful sawmill owners are always seeking ways to improve their operations and make them run more efficiently. If an upgrade in one area of the mill contributes a positive ripple benefit elsewhere in the process, that’s so much the better. That’s exactly what happened with the installation of the first Brunette Machinery Retract-To-Load (RTL) log singulator unit at Carrier Lumber’s Tabor mill operation near Prince George, B.C. “
