Steel Revival: A Step-by-Step Machine Rebuild
Friday, May 23rd, 2025
Did you know that Brunette can refurbish or even rebuild your old machine? When a customer asks about this option, we offer them a “steel revival” to give their machine a second life.
But what does it mean to rebuild an entire machine? Refurbishing a wood-processing machine such as a wood waste grinder, BioSizer, or a drum chipper includes disassembling, sandblasting, replacing all worn items, updating the electrical systems, repainting the entire frame and more.
Our service technicians are experts in mechanical, hydraulic, lubrication, pneumatic, electrical, and control systems. Not only do they have experience with these systems, but they also understand how each of our Brunette machines performs.
Let’s look at the rebuilding process for our CBI Grizzly Mill Hog.

INSPECTION REPORT
The first step in our rebuild process is to supply an inspection report. Our service technicians visually inspect the machine for signs of wear or damage. They review all available maintenance and service reports. Using this information and based on their years of experience, the team then develops a customized rebuild plan, including any recommended system updates and a cost estimate to finish the rebuild.

DISASSEMBLY
Once the customer accepts the quote, our team proceeds to the second step — disassembling the machine.
During this stage, the team determines which parts need replacement and which are still serviceable. To do this, they strip the machine down to the bare frame — every component is removed and inspected, including all fasteners (pins, bushings, bolts), the sheave, taper sheaves, bearings, rotor, grate, and all liners. The frame itself is checked for excessive wear and weld failures.

RECONDITIONING, REPAIR, AND REPLACEMENT
After the inspection, our technicians update all components to meet the latest specification requirements. They inspect the rotor for damage or wear and recommend reconditioning or replacement. They install new tungsten carbide striker bars and replace all the worn pins, bushings and bolts, as well as the sheave and taper sheaves.
Next, the team takes the bearing caps off. They pull out both housings with the rotor bearings and remove old grease. Then they remove the rotor bearings from the bearing housings and check if the housing bores need replacing. They inspect both rotor bearings and replace them if required.
Then they install new electrical and hydraulic systems and update existing proximity switches to our new standard electrical package, complete with new J-Boxes and wiring. The customer is given a new typical wiring drawing.
As part of the rebuild, our technicians inspect the hydraulic power unit, including the hoses, filter, and heater. They restore the hydraulic system to the original OEM specifications.
If the machine has a chute, the team will inspect it and undertake any repairs. They will replace or add a rubber baffle on the chute inlet.

REPAINTING
The machine is power-washed, sandblasted and painted with the required colours. In this case, the Grizzly Mill frame is CBI yellow. The guards are safety yellow. The rotor and inside of the frame are primed grey. The safety bar and rotor locking pin are red. Any bare metal will have a rust inhibitor applied.
After painting and reassembly, the team applies the standard Brunette and safety decals and provides a decal location drawing. A new Brunette serial plate is attached to the machine.
REASSEMBLY AND TESTING
After the team reassembles the machine, they record all critical torques, clearances, and pressure settings. They run in the bearings. They connect the HPU to the hydraulic cylinders, operate the manual valve and stroke the hydraulic cylinders. Then they check the counterbalance valves. That’s it! The like-new Grizzly Mill Hog is now ready for action.

SHOULD YOU REBUILD YOUR MACHINE?
As any wood processing machine owner knows, the more proactive your upkeep, the more likely you’ll be able to run your machines beyond their recommended service life. This includes everything from replacing heavy-wear components promptly to regularly adhering to lubrication schedules, and servicing hydraulic and drive systems at the intervals recommended in the machine’s operation manual.
To increase your equipment’s lifespan, make sure you perform regular maintenance, especially as your machines reach higher hours of operation. When your machine nears the end of its operating life or if you are considering purchasing a used machine, talk to our technicians to determine if a rebuild would be cost-effective for you.

Take Control of Your Lumber Supply
Friday, November 15th, 2024
Do you have feeding problems inside and outside your mill? The Brunette Flare Butt Reducer can help you take control of your lumber supply by converting troublesome logs into valuable lumber while improving productivity across every machine center in your mill.

Installing a Brunette Flare Butt Reducer at the start of the production line affords many advantages throughout the entire mill. including improved log handling and sorting, better alignment and log control during scanning. As well, more accurate curve sawing occurs without influence from the butt flare and, negative effects from conveyor chain transitions during the sawing are minimized.
When the flare butt ends are removed, sand, pebbles, and other debris, often embedded in the butt end of logs, are removed which reduces wear on saws and chipping knives. Removing large flare butt ends improves log handling on transfer decks.
The Brunette Flare Butt Reducer features a rugged main frame, extreme-duty lifting arm assembly, heavy-duty hold-down arm with a large pivot shaft. The hold down arm log turner and bottom log turners have electric drives. Our Flare Butt Reducer has a replaceable cutterhead shaft mounted in a B-Lok. The cutterhead assembly has 42 four-sided solid steel knives with a protective cover, powered by an 1800 RPM direct drive. The FBR can handle a maximum 40″ diameter log with a 54″diameter butt. The Brunette Flare Butt Reducer is also equipped with a short-log support.
The Brunette Dual Head Flare Butt Reducer

Our custom-designed Brunette Flare Butt Reducer Dual Head (DH) model has all the same features and advantages as our original model, including proper positioning of logs, accurate scanning, reduced downtime, and increased recovery. Additionally, this unique model eliminates the need to orient the logs. The Dual Head Flare Butt Reducer has the same solid construction as our standard Flare Butt Reducer, but it is equipped with two cutterheads; each with a pivoting mount for 100 HP 1800 RPM electric motor, a set of 42 four-sided knives, a hydraulic cylinder, and a pivoting cutterhead cover.
With either model Brunette FBR, you will gain the following benefits:
LOG SORTING:
- Transport and feeding of logs will be more reliable on all conveyors
LOG INTAKE AND DEBARKING
- Less wear & tear on the debarker means fewer spare parts used and mreduced downtime
- The debarker will handle bigger logs when the butt flare is removed
- Higher quality pulp chips as less bark is left between the butt flares
SAWMILL IN GENERAL
- Less transport problems — for logs, cants, and side pockets
- Higher feed speeds can be maintained without the butt flares
- Faster and easier turning of the logs
Brunette Flare Butt Reducers’ unique design and innovative cutting geometry increase recovery, while their robust construction reduces maintenance and improves uptime for continual return on investment.

Everything You Need to Know About Brunette Chippers
Friday, April 19th, 2024
We don’t need to tell you that wood processing machinery operates under demanding conditions. When you are in the business of producing quality pulp chips you need Chippers that can handle the toughest jobs and deliver the highest production rates.
Today’s sawmills are faced with ever-increasing demands for capacity, efficiency and availability. They require custom solutions and rugged machines that are easy to maintain and perform well under rigorous use. While the main purpose of a sawmill is processing softwood or hardwood logs into quality lumber, they also need the means to process the sawdust, chips and bark as additional value streams.

Brunette Machinery offers a full line of drum chippers available in various sizes and model configurations. With their rigid structural frame and powerful high-inertia rotor, Brunette Chippers are built for optimal performance, lower maintenance costs, and the best quality chips at the highest capacities.
Our Chippers are renowned for producing quality pulp chips from short material that is difficult to control. Some of our models are capable of producing “micro-chips” — giving you access to more markets, and more flexibility.
Designed with a wide throat, Brunette Chippers can accommodate large pieces such as logs, lily pads, cores, and spinouts. The single piece tapered knives process material across the full width of the drum providing even wear and longer life.
Brunette Chippers have many features making them ideal for your application including adjustable chip length and the Brunette Quick-Change knife system for one-person changeouts.
The Benefits
Superior Chipping Performance: Brunette Drum Chippers combine high capacity and excellent cutting geometry to easily process green and dry trim ends, shorts, overs, lily pads, small logs, and butt ends.
High Quality Chips – Minimal Maintenance Costs: Brunette Chippers are furnished with first-class arbor bearings that ensure close knife to anvil clearance for optimum chip quality. The contour of the drum creates a clamping force to securely hold the material between the anvil and the knife path. This prevents the material from tipping up toward the drum, reducing maintenance costs.
Save Time & Money: The swing-away anvil saves valuable production time and repair costs associated with tramp metal.

The Construction
Frame: The rugged main frame is welded with reinforced steel plate bearing mounts and connecting flanges for infeed and rear discharge chutes. It is stress relieved and jig machined for accurate alignment of bearings, knives, and anvil. Heavy-duty bosses are spigotted into frame for pivot pins and shear pins.
Rotor: Constructed with welded steel plate segments, the high inertia rotor processes high volumes and uses less energy than other industrial chippers. The rotor is mounted to a HTSR shaft by two B-LOCs and the entire rotor assembly is supported by Pillow Block bearings. The rotor is adjustable for optimum knife-to-anvil clearance.
Access Hood: The hood opens with a hydraulic cylinder operated from a Hydraulic Power Unit with a 1.5HP 1800 rpm motor for safe, ergonomic, and easy knife changes.
Anvil: The swing away anvil assembly is secured by shear pins and comes complete with a bolt-on hardened, reversible anvil.
Knives: Brunette Chippers are equipped with solid, flat tapered knives, and quick-release knife clamps for easy knife changes. The knives process material across the full width of the drum for even wear and longer life.
Drive: V-belt transmission (where supplied)
Colour: Brunette Blue

The Options
Pneumatic Disk Brakes: These air adjustable, heavy-duty caliper brakes are built to bring the rotor to a stop quickly and safely. This quick stop action also speeds up knife changes. Guard is included for safety.
Screen: A bottom screen is available as an option for all Brunette Drum Chippers. Made from AR400 plate, this rugged bolt-on screen is designed to reduce overs — typically 0% to 3%.
Chute: The infeed chute mounts directly to the Drum Chipper ensuring a smooth transition for material entering the drum from a conveyor. The chute features one-piece construction with a 45-degree slope and comes complete with a large inspection door. The chute is equipped with a containment curtain to prevent debris blow back, heavy duty ribs for durability and an abrasion-resistant liner.
Key Knife Uni-Ridge System: This disposable turn-knife system is an alternative to Brunette’s standard quick-change flat tapered knives. The Key Knife system comes complete with Uni-Ridge Drum Chipper pocket assemblies including Uni-Ridge starter knives, counter knives, holders, and hardware. The Key Knife Uni-Ridge system is compatible with standard Brunette OEM knife clamps & studs.
